Benefits of camp

Although each child is a unique individual, we believe summer camp is beneficial for all kids. No matter what a child’s interests are, camp helps children develop important social, emotional and cognitive skills. Best of all, children create memories that last a lifetime at camp.

Whether it be summer day camp or overnight camp the benefits are endless and can last a lifetime. Not only will your child return from camp with greater independence and a stronger sense of identity, but they will also have developed new skills, made new friends and created memories they will cherish forever.

As adults, many people look back fondly on the days of summer camp. They remember the thrill of building a fire with friends for the first time, or the carefree afternoons spent swimming under the summer sun. Camp became not just a way to pass summer break, but a vital part of who they are. At camp, children grow, explore and learn about themselves and the people and world around them, and they have fun throughout the entire process. Below are some of the benefits of the summer camp experience.

1. Develops Lifelong Skills
2. Promotes Independence
3. Makes Time for Play
4. Teaches Teamwork
5. Teaches Resiliency
6. Provides Fun Screen-Free Activities
7. Encourages a Connection with Nature
8. Fosters Growth
9. Builds Self-Esteem
10. Supports Healthy Living
11. Nurtures Friendships
12. Teaches Kids to Respect Differences

How you can help

Sponsor one or more youth to attend a day or overnight camp. Give them the opportunity of a lifetime to explore their interests, develop new skills, make new friends, gain a greater sense of independence, reliance, and confidence, and help them expore and grow.

For many families, camp is a luxury that is out of reach financially. But camp can be a vital experience that will last a lifetime and provide skills, memories, and development that has no price tag.

To learn more about the various camp options available, Pay It Forward has listed the many camp choices on a directory site called Help A Mission.

Go to: helpamission.com

Through the Help A Mission site, you can sponsor a youth to attend camp. Pay It Forward will identify a youth or youths in need, and make a camp match. Matches are made based on the amounts donated and the applications received from youth around the country.

You will be informed about how your sponsorship was used, so you can feel good about the impact your participation has made in a youth’s life.

Parents, is your youth (ages 6-16) interested in attending summer day camp or overnight camp, but the cost is prohibitive? There are sponsors who are donating to this program and may be able to help you achieve this goal for your child or children.

Click on the below link to complete the application for consideration of a camp match. As camp applications are submitted, Pay It Forward’s board of directors and social work consultants will evaluate each application and match requests with the available camps and available funds.

Pay It Forward would love to be able to help every youth that submits an application but camp matches will be dependent on donations.

Considerations for full or partial camp matches will include:

  • Geographical location of the camp and potential camper
  • Financial needs of the family
  • Interests of the youth
  • Whether the camp(s) are specialized or general
  • Amount of donations
  • Availability of camp slots
